ARE YOU A COMPANY LOOKING FOR A SUMMER INTERN? ARE YOU A STUDENT LOOKING FOR AN INTERNSHIP? IF YOU ANSWERED YES, THEN...
WELCOME TO THE EVENT DESIGN
INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The event industry is
exploding and the need for qualified design talent has never been greater. The
purpose of the Event Design Internship Program is to expose the next
generation of designers to the excitement and challenges of designing engaging
structural representations, while also providing you with access to budding
talent.
The Event Design Internship Program (EDIP) seeks to match college students with event,
exhibit and environmental design companies nationwide.
This year we’ve made it
very easy. Your firm can list all summer internship openings on this website.
And students can apply directly to the contact at your company.

Overview for Companies
The Event Design Internship Program is sponsored by Event Design
Magazine. This is an annual summer internship program, offering 10-12 week
summer internships to qualified students in the areas of industrial, graphic and
event/exhibit design.
The best way to ensure that
the most promising students are exposed to careers in event design is to give
them hands-on experience in your company as an EDIP intern. Event Design
magazine has promoted this program at the best design schools in the country.
Guidelines for Companies
-
We recommend that interns
work 25-35 hours per week, for at least 10 weeks.
-
We recommend compensation
for the interns in the range of $10+ per hour.
-
Supervisors should be
available to the interns for guidance and instruction.
-
Interns should be given
meaningful and worthwhile assignments that foster their growth. While some
“grunt work” is to be expected in any internship, it should be kept to a
minimum, and the majority of the workload should focus on the specific area
that the intern applied for.
-
Upon arrival, interns
should be given a clear list of assignments and responsibilities and be aware
what is expected of them for the duration of the internship, and given an
adequate workload. Responsibilities should increase over the duration of the
internship.
-
Participating
organizations should send interns general information about the company prior
to arrival.
-
Participating companies
should communicate with interns prior to their arrival and provide them with
directions to the office and instructions on who to report to and where to go
once they have arrived.
-
Participating companies
must inform interns of company policies prior to arrival, such as dress code,
and any other areas of the company culture that they must adhere to.
-
Interns should be given a
brief orientation by human resources or other staff on the first day of the
internship.
Next Steps
Write up your own ad
seeking an intern. Keep it to several short paragraphs. All of the following
information must be included in order to participate:
- Describe your company or design firm — what you do, what type of clients you work with, what’s the corporate culture?
- Give a job description for the internship — what the major responsibilities will be, broken down by % of time if possible. Who will the student be working with?
- State number of hours a week that you will commit to employing the intern. Note desired start date and finish date for the internship. State compensation.
- Describe what you are looking for in an intern — what talents, background, and experience you desire.
- Give clear application instructions: name of contact person and email address, along with any student documentation you require. If there are any other specific instructions, e.g. how to submit design samples or a portfolio; what format you prefer, etc.
- Send your job posting in a Word document attachment to EDIP@RED7MEDIA.COM. Also, if you choose to attach your company logo, please send in JPG or GIF format (200 x 93 pixels).
- All internship opportunities will be posted within 24 hours of receipt of the ad.
- Once you find your dream intern let us know. Send us an email (EDIP@RED7MEDIA.COM) with the news of your hire. We will then have your internship ad/posting removed from website.

Overview for
students
The Event Design Internship
Program gives design students the opportunity to work in design departments at
companies that focus on designing exhibits, outdoor events, museum displays,
corporate environments, and more.
EDIP interns receive
personal attention and guidance from the design staff, and are given the
opportunity to contribute in a meaningful capacity and gain firsthand knowledge
of the event and exhibit design industry.
The lengths of the
internships may vary, but are designed to run 10-12 weeks, based on the needs of
the participating company. Most internships begin in late May or early June and
end in late August or early September (the exact starting and ending date is
determined on an individual basis by participating companies).
Compensation may vary from
company to company. Each internship listing will indicate the compensation. The
pay period at most companies is twice a month. Interns should plan to work a
minimum of 25 hours a week, unless special arrangements are made between the
intern and the company for a part-time schedule.
Guidelines for students
-
Please apply directly to a company that has an internship posting that is of
interest to you
-
If you are unable to afford the expense of relocating for the 10-12 week
internship period, please choose a geographic area close to your hometown, or
where you are able to stay with family or friends.
-
Interns are responsible for their own travel, housing, food, and personal
expenses. Most summer housing providers require at least a three-week deposit
up front, and some require payment in full before the scheduled move-in date.
Please be prepared to pay for your housing as soon as you are notified of your
specific internship placement.
-
Participating companies have the option to interview candidates before making
a final selection, but all interviews must be arranged by the company.
-
How accurately students follow the application instruction is taken into
consideration, as well as grammatical and typing errors within the cover
letter. Students are also selected on the basis of their background in design,
including knowledge of and experience in graphic, architectural, and/or
industrial design concepts, principles and relevant software programs, and
academic courses and/or experience in the field of design.
Next Steps
- Find an internship posting that you would like to apply for. Read application instructions carefully to see what is required.
- As a general rule, always send a cover letter that includes:
- Activities or experience in the field of graphic, architectural or industrial design
- Related internships or summer jobs
- Related courses taken or planned
- Previous summer and extra-curricular activities
- Include specific areas of interest and any knowledge of event, exhibit and environmental design
- Most importantly, describe why you want to participate in an event/exhibit design internship, what you expect to gain from the experience and what you can contribute to the assigned company
- If you have a resume include it. If you don’t have a resume, it’s time to write one.
- Carefully follow directions about how to submit design samples or a portfolio if required.
NOTE: New internship opportunities will be posted on this site as they are received throughout the Spring. Check back often to see new listings.
